MX 17 Mate

#1 Post by sdibaja » Sun May 27, 2018 7:54 pm

Good afternoon.
I am a Mate fan.
I have been using MX 17 for a few days, and I am enamored with the tools.
Normally I run plain Debian Stretch Mate and am happy but envy the MX tools.

OK, to the point. I now have Mate desktop on top of Xfce and struggle with getting the normal Mate Extras meta package etc. going properly.
Has this been done? I hate to try to reinvent the wheel.
Thanks

Sure, Mate's great! What specifically about the Mate Extras meta package isn't going properly?

Good afternoon Sir.

The meta package is incomplete, or rather I only get the bare bones of Mate.

I made another fresh install and took some better notes...

===
with Synaptic install Mate Extras meta package, and Mate Tweak

reboot, Mate is up and running... MATE 1.16.2

I try to take some notes, but no Pluma!
install Pluma

right click options are very minimal: no "open as admin"
synaptic: install caja-gksu
(includes caja-extensions-common)

missing panel gadgets:
trash
system monitor
network monitor
and a few others that i don't use much

then with MX Package installer: install Mate...
no change

enable backports and Testing repos ... no upgrades available
===
With SolydX if I do the same ... install Mate Extras meta package, and Mate Tweak, I get the whole shooting match.

with both SolydX or Debian Stretch if I enable Testing I get Mate 1.20 (and some nice enhancements)

I am making it work out slowly, no brick walls yet.

I am a bit befuddled. Maybe the apt pinning is restricting me, I will have to have a look and maybe I can figure that out.
...hmmm maybe I just need the actual Debian repos?

I was just kinda hoping that someone had already made a viable Mate respin (not Chinese!) and saved me from some of the heavy lifting.

thanks for your time, Peter

In this particular case you might have been better off starting with vanilla Debian. That's what I did and it works great on Debian 9.

ah,

we have the actual debian repos. however, I don't think there is a "mate-extras" package. there is mate-desktop-environment-extras, which is perhaps what you mean.

that said, I think your main confusion is that solydxK and debian both install "recommended" packages as depends, while antiX and MX do not.

you can change that function in the Synaptic preferences, and I suspect your experience will be closer to what you are used to.

yes, I mean mate-desktop-environment-extras
I will dig around in the Synaptic preferences and see what I can come up with.
Thank you Sir

The point here is that I love many of the MX apps. and the installer.
Classy work!

Note that MX Test Repo is not Debian Testing Repo. The latter contains packages being tested for the next version of Debian Stable, Buster.

MX Test Repo contains packages backported or packaged by our packaging team from various sources to work with the current Debian Stable base, Stretch.

Thanks Sir. I figured that part out.
Buster (testing) and 1.20 would be nice... but the other Debian 9 Stable packages?
I am surprised that installing the mate-desktop-environment-extras meta package did not throw errors for the missing, or not linked, packages.
probably an AptPreferences thing... still trying to wrap my elderly head around that https://wiki.debian.org/AptPreferences

MX 17 isn't using AptPreferences/apt pinning. /etc/apt/apt.conf tells apt not to install recommended packages unless specifically told to. That's why no error was thrown for the missing packages - apt was doing what it was told to do.

While it's your system to do with what you like, mixing MX with Debian testing/buster is inviting a messy situation. Mate 1.20 should be in debian backports sooner than later.

Although Debian documentation such as the linked page above generally runs parallel to MX Linux, it's not always so and you may benefit from reading MX user manual section 5 Software Management.
