After all these years, it won't be easy for me to develop a new habit of writing tutorials in a text editor first (even though it makes a great deal of sense to do so).
I always do that on longer posts after losing a couple.

I have never been logged out, except when clearing the browser cache.. You may try clearing the board cookies, link at the bottom right of the Index page. This will log you out. Just log back in.

It can be other things other than the phpBB software, iSP, browser, Nevertheless we will not ignore the possibility it is the phpBB software and will add it to our list of items to investigate. In the meantime, for those experiencing this, the suggestions made in this thread of an external editor should be helpful.

Yes, to using an external editor for longer posts. It has to be a win win.

I've just written my little how-to again "locally" this time. :)

I'll go & paste it in now.

Another possibility : flipping between the http and https versions of the site? Maybe you opened or logged into one, then somehow opened the other?

@asqwerth It happened three times, & I was NOT bouncing around the forum whilst writing it. With the last attempt (to make a post about the problem) I wasn't logged in for long before I tried to post it.

[edit:] I missed putting the important NOT before bouncing. doh!

Not in your case handy, but users should be aware there is a 60 minute session timeout.

EDIT: By the way I have moved this thread to site help
