I read through the link and then:

cd /home/earl/.local/share/barrier/SSL

in term used command:
openssl req -x509 -nodes -days 365 -subj /CN=Barrier -newkey rsa:4096 -keyout Barrier.pem -out Barrier.pem

restart barrier

on both machines and it is now working.

Did searches.
/usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache
was showing "calibre-ebook-viewer.desktop;calibre-gui.desktop" for all or at least most text lines. I copied the file from a good working partition. Now seems OK, but hope just installing calibre didn't cause all of this.

Thanks. It will take me a bit to look at all you gave me, but if I make a snapshot and not preserve anything then boot it. The demo account fails in the same way. How do I dig down to the place that is trying to open ebook-viewer rather than featherpad to edit a file as root?

When I tried to right-click on a file to edit as root, it opened a window for my password. I entered it and nothing. You can open LibreOffice Writer. Drag your pics into it. Resize them as you like. Then Export As PDF.
