Re: Microsoft Defender goes Linux

I'd guess this thread will be full of conspiracy theories... I won't add to them ;) I'll wait to see what happens, assuming anything does actually happen.

Re: For Latest Thunderbird on MX below 19

Mozilla products and forks such as Firefox, Thunderbird, Pale Moon, Waterfox come with built-in updaters (if you get them from the net) that won't work if you place them outside your home folder. You can of course follow tutorials to get write permission outside your home, but that's too much work ...

For Latest Thunderbird on MX below 19

As there's no more updates to Thunderbird on MX versions <19, I thought this might help those that are not upgrading to MX 19 yet. Latest available (and the last) Thunderbird version in the repos is 60.9.0 - latest version (at time of posting) for download at Mozilla is 68.2.2. Here's a quick guide ...

Re: Lax security in Archive Manager (file-roller) or 7zip...

I'm a bear of little brain. To test this should we first encrypt a text file using GPG then archive it with 7z and also encrypt the archive? Must the passwords be the same or can they be different? I tried this without first encrypting the text file, just archiving it as an encrypted 7z archive usi...

Lax security in Archive Manager (file-roller) or 7zip...

... well, if not lax then maybe lazy programming. Try the following: Encrypt a text file, any one will do, so long as it has a few lines of text Right-click the file and archive it and encrypt it (use 7z) Double-click the .7z encrypted file - enter the password - and view it Close the viewer, and cl...

Re: rkhunter, a false positive into MX19x32 ?

Using Rkhunter 1.4.6-5~mx17+1 on MX 18.3 - I just get the following: Warning: The following suspicious (large) shared memory segments have been found: Process: /usr/bin/xfce4-terminal PID: 13717 Owner: chris Size: 4.0MB (configured size allowed: 1.0MB) Process: /usr/bin/xfdesktop PID: 2725 Owner: ch...

USB permissions Tip

At times, after inserting a USB stick, it's owned by root, so no write operations possible - this is despite the setting in MX Tweak to mount drives without root permissions (which may not apply to USB sticks?) I know others have this happen sometimes, and it's easy enough to fix each time it happen...

Re: Suggestion for addition to MX Tools

I'd rather see a tool that would help users doing reinstalls, like aptik, but customized for MX. There's a few thoughts and a couple of lines of code here that might be a starting point. Although you'll need to decide how much control you give to the user over the process - and it'll need a simple ...
