I opened alsamixer in the terminal and it shows mm which I read somewhere is muted.

Looking at pulse audio control it shows line out plugged in but speakers unavailable.

Thanks for your reply. Actually before I saw your reply looked at QSI and realised it is in fact a software problem and not a hardware issue. I was in MX19 when it broke so just now booted in MX 21 and sound works there. it also works when I boot my last MX19 snapshot. I wonder if I could find pulse...

OK I found a solution that worked.
I ran apt-get update --allow-releaseinfo-change
in the terminal.
I then closed the terminal and ran the green mx-update and it worked.
That fixed the debian buster update problem.
I am going to mark this solved.

By the way, this is an old Lenovo M-58 SFF that I bought in 2013. I rarely update the MX-19 on this one because I mostly use windows on it for genealogy.
