Thank you for the response siamhie. I did as you suggested. Tried to format just sda5 to root MX23 and sda1 to /boot/efi and still "failed to format partition"

Thanks Stevo. I did boot with live and have saved a few files that weren't backed up. But I never thought to checkout the rescue and cleanup. I'll do that but I also downloaded the latest version and probably will end up with a complete reinstall. All the best!
