I found a way to do the Mesa upgrade using MX Package Installer. For all steps below make sure the "Hide library and developer packages" checkbox is unchecked. 1) 'Full App Catalog' tab, select Debian Backports as source, type 'mesa' in search box, upgrade all installed mesa packages that are shown ...

Even used a rotary dial type phone to call up the computer, I'm pretty sure I was using a touch-tone phone back then. Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever owned a rotary dial phone, though we used one at my parents house while I was growing up in the 1960s & 70s.
