Laptop finally died

After 6 years of daily use, the HP Elitebook 8440p that I bought as a refurb finally gave up the ghost. Went to tuen it on and the fan ran full blast and all the indicator light came on - and nothing else. Went to the Walmart website and started looking for a replacement. Walmart beats Amazon in man...

Re: Any other readers here?

Most of the Roman historical fiction I read has a huge basis in fact. The wrap their fictional characters in actual events of the period. The Cato & Macro series (Under the Eagle) by Simon Scarrow is really enjoyable - 17 books so far. The books by SJA Turney are also very good and I've read all...

Any other readers here?

Since I retired in 2015 I have went back to reading a lot. For years reading was tough as I don't have great eyesight but since I discovered tablets and increased fonts I am reading 2-3 books a week. I can't remember when I last turned on the TV as there's nothing worth watching IMHO. I like a lot o...

Installed calibre died

It started to show up in the local/obsolete section in synaptic and will no longer run. I deleted it and tried to reinstall but no joy,.. Update, rebooted and went back into synaptic and it allowed me to install, version was 3.42.0 versus the 3.43.0 that had been installed. At least it's working aga...

Re: Calibre upgrade more bad news

Now my installed calibre is dead. I tried to reinstall but no joy.

Perhaps I'd do better just installing from the calibre website as I know it will work. Until MX started to have a newish version in the repo this is how I had it installed...

Calibre upgrade

For lack of a better term, I've been getting a false positive on a calibre upgrade (3.4.3 to 3.4.4) for several days now. It shows up in synaptic as an upgrade but does not process...

Re: MX-17 to MX-18 update testing

Have updated my 3 main laptops and all is well. I'm glad this method is available as I run a highly modified version of MX and I hate doing all the work again...

Re: Can anyone recommend to me a cheapish, current model notebook that loves Linux?

While I have faster, more powerful laptops, I use my Lenovo X230 (Core I5) more than any other. You can find them cheap and they are good machines...

Re: what was the first linux distro you used

Started with Ubuntu in the mid-2000s and looked at just about everything. I've spent a lot of time with Buntu 16.04 (a heavily modified Lubuntu with XFCE), PCLinuxOS, Manjaro, and of course MX. Linux was just a hobby and a toy until Win 10 - then it became a necessity to find a distro that meets my ...
