Re: the go-to distro

My go-to distro has to be efficient, simple, stable, fast, based on Debian stable, with backports, Xfce4.1x, and have a supportive community. Sounds like MX-14. I've rolled and it's mostly stable, educational and fun. Since 1998, it's been muLinux, Redhat, SuSE, Mandrake, Mepis, Kanotix, sidux, Debi...

Re: New Firefox

The second is the existence of a browser named Palemoon. Is it advisable? Wow. Just scanned through the ten pages on the new Firefox. Some for, some against. :) I tried FF29 and was reasonably happy with it. Probably because I've been using Chrome/Chromium for the last several years. I used Sea Mon...

Re: Do I need 64 bit?

The quickest answer is to say that there is no plan for a 64bit MX-14. Which makes me very happy. :) More emphasis on keeping it working well. I have a mix of netbooks for work, old PCs in my wife's preschool, and my 64bit desktop. I run 32-bit on everything. It simplifies support considerably. I h...

Re: Thunar hangs as root

Well, selecting Yes to the first, Yes/No question about root, seems to not break Thunar.
I selected No at the second Yes/No question, but it seems to have caused no discernible problem.

Thanks for listening. :)

Re: Thunar hangs as root

@lucky9, ran dpkg-reconfigure on every package listed in synaptic from before the update until after it. No luck. Seemed OK, and no error messages. @anti, started to purge, 1st on the list is dpkg: set to purge and it wants to remove 664 packages. :p so, it seems like a simpler process to reinstall ...

Re: Thunar hangs as root

Thanks for your efforts.
I'll be home day after tomorrow and will see how it fares on my desktop install.
I will make a clone before so I can roll back if it causes a problem. :)

Re: Thunar hangs as root

On the older AA1, booted the MX install tonight, then upgraded with Synaptic. This time, at the choice of changing root stuff, I said Yes. So far, Thunar runs as root as exected. No excitement, just runs. On the newer AA1, I had accepted the default choice of No. :frown: And now Thunar will ...

Re: Thunar hangs as root

Thanks joany, I don't have a problem starting Thunar as root, only that it locks up the whole computer within a few seconds. It starts fine. I move the cursor a bit and soon it stops responding. Sometimes I can click the big X and it will close the window, and I can continue, but the CPU is still pe...
