you have a bumblebee/optimus system. if you choose the backports option, you will get the newer nvidia.

the verison number shown is for bumblebee

I think updating in mx-pi is the same as synaptic. we force the gnome frontend at install time.

on the products page there are monthly snapshots and the original release. which did you download, and have you happened to check the md5sum to make sure the download is good. ok, so update the installer first. there were a few issues identified and fixed and that might work out better for you.
