Re: Installation woes and a GRUB headache - Part 2

Thank you for finding the real fstab. My command just gave the fstab for the liveUSB not the InstalledUSB that I was looking for, sorry about that. Anyway, looking at the fstab, I see several extra entries not needed for a USB install, and are causing problems when you try to boot on the Dell machin...

Re: Installation woes and a GRUB headache - Part 2

Grub wasn't broken if you were seeing the kingfisher background. I fear that grub may be broken now, though, given all the errors reported by reinstalling. Verify that you still get the previous boot behavior and then post the contents of /etc/fstab from the installed root partition on the USB. And ...

Re: Installation woes and a GRUB headache - Part 2

If you are getting to a grub menu then grub itself is probably fine. It seems like the hand-off from grub to MX-16 is where things are going south. I've had similar startup problems with a variety of distros though with UEFI not legacy booting. I have more experience where the grub menu doesn't show...

Re: Installation woes and a GRUB headache - Part 2

I checked your UUID for the root partition in your grub.cfg against blkid and they do match. If dolphin_oracle's idea doesn't work, then let's take a look at your fstab. Plug your USB into a system running linux. sudo mkdir /mytmp sudo mount /dev/sdc1/ /mytmp cat /mytmp/etc/fstab Adjust "sdc1" to po...

Re: Installation woes and a GRUB headache - Part 2

Gave up waiting for root device. I've seen similar errors when the partition UUID's don't match those in etc/fstab. The error is essentially a partition not ready/not found timeout. Check the swap partition, as linux installers are sometimes careless about picking the first swap partition found rat...

Re: MX-17 Beta 1 Feedback Thread

Finally had a chance to test the liveUSB grub.cfg update on the T100CHI (baytrail mixed-mode UEFI.) and it works great on my troublesome device (see https://forum.mxlinux.org/viewtopic.php?f=107&t=42863 ). I made a stock MX17b1(64 bit) liveUSB with unetbootin. Many thanks for the update. I hope to f...

Re: Weird Live-ESP anomalies.

You might want to move a copy of the background image to /boot/grub/ and update the background path in themes.txt. It seems that your 10 second delay could be a file not found timeout. Grub isn't very good at finding files that aren't in the /boot directories. The good news is that your grub install...

Re: Weird Live-ESP anomalies.

It's there That makes sense, since Ubuntu/Mint, etc. isn't all that original! As an MX newbie, I probably don't have all my repo sources set up properly yet. If grub-efi-ia32, grub-efi-ia32.bin are installed, then grub-install should do the right thing. As long as the grub modules are in /usr/lib/g...

Re: Weird Live-ESP anomalies.

To install grub on a 32bit UEFI system you'd need to have grub-efi-ia32 and grub-efi-ia32.bin installed. I know its available in Mint and Ubuntu, but I didn't see it with synaptic for MX. I avoided the grub issue by skipping it during MX install and letting one of my other linux distros add MX to it...

Re: Baytrail grub issue

@jbMacAZ, @all: Wouldn't it be a cleaner solution to completely wipe the medium using sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdX ? My issue was the MX-16.1 install ISO wouldn't boot. I have other distros installed on my system that are working fine, so there are limits to what I'll do just to try a liveUSB. ...
