Further investigating suggests to me that the Mepis machine is not seeing the network properly, despite being able to talk to the Win machine. The Mepis machine has the name "Mepis 1", but the router's Clients List sees the name as "none", even though it gives a MAC address and the DHCP address OK. ...

When I try CUPS it asks which "other printer" I want, and I don't know how to manswer the question.

As regards enabling a printer, this is easy if you go into CUPS and choose the relevan printer, then yoy can set it to enabled. I don't understand how / why printers get disabled though.
