Deja Boo

A couple of days ago, as is my wont, I decided to revisit one my lesser used machines, in the belief that when put to bed nearly 2 years ago all was well only to discover several shortcomings - mine and/or the machine! This is a kinda update on https://forum.mxlinux.org/viewtopic.php?f=92&t=41561 wh...

Re: VirtualBox install query

Ok, thanks both. Just being cautious, having been forced by eol to upgrade Mint and PCLos this year and having difficulties getting VB up and running in each whereas it had been a doddle hitherto!

VirtualBox install query

Just about to install VB to my MX16 but was puzzled to discover that virtualbox-guest-dkms, virtualbox-guest-utils and virtualbox-guest-x11 are pre-installed. Why? Does it affect my install choices?

Re: SmartPhone video on PC - old dogs and new tricks!

Thanks for that but, as said, if I need to view smartphone videos on PC in future then using Vlc in MX is fine - and just puzzled why the Win versions don't seem to do it. If permanent change to portrait were required, I believe VirtualDub would do it in Win. My OP was just sort of musing that a pos...

SmartPhone video on PC - old dogs and new tricks!

Over recent recent years I have sometimes found it preferable to record interesting (to me) events as videos rather stills, usually with a (proper) camera but occasionally with my smartphone - either bacause I forgot the camera or had battery issues. Yesterday was the latter! Unfortunately I'm somew...

Re: A couple of niggles

Screenlets will work in any (or most) desktop environments. In this case it is xfce desktop and kwin as the window manager. And two window managers can't exist simultaneously. Kwin replaces Xfwm4. Do not confuse DE with WM. I believe the problem here is that autostart sequence tries to launch the se...

Re: A couple of niggles

Haven't used Kde in years, but here are some ideas about why.
It's not Kde but Xfce using Kwin as the window manager (instead of Compiz).
Screenlets. Probably because it is set up for LightDM?
Never had anything to do with LightDM. Screenlets work fine except that they don't autostart.

A couple of niggles

I've been living with these irritations for a while but it's time to seek solutions. As possible relevant background this MX-16 Xfce with Kwin (https://forum.mxlinux.org/viewtopic.php?f=100&t=41597). 1> The mouse pointer (white arrow) frequently changes to a black cross. This seems to be invoked whe...

Re: Icon placement

Icons can be placed anywhere on the virtual grid during session(s) but will join the others after a reboot. However, out of interest, I tried setting the icon-spacing values to 0 (as suggested in my earlier post #4 ) and placed an icon somewhere in the middle.where it will still snap to the nearest ...
