Re: BIOS update Hell

Shut down, unplug, remove battery. Wait 30 seconds.
Replace battery, plug in. Press and hold F2 and then click the power button. Keep holding F2 until the BIOS screen comes up.

Re: Is elogind solution for MX systemd question??

If MX stays sysvinit (my preference) it will certainly use elogind. If it goes systemd it will not. The problem, as I understand it, is that without the no longer developed systemd-shim it's not possible to be able to boot into either one as we can now since elogind & systemd conflict. There is also...

Use the Repo Manager to select a new mirror. There are currently no package files at the myren.net addresses.

Re: Systemd free MX19?

I'd add, what would you choose if your apps and other parts of your computer Only work with systemd? Just what I do now for the one application I need Windows to run (tax software). I run a VM. The framing of this type of issue as all-or-nothing is what keeps multitudes running Windows. I'd rather ...

Re: PC keeps freezing

The GK208 line of nvidia cards has been problematic with the nouveau driver which your system info shows you are using. I also have a GK208 type of card (730 instead of 710) which will usually crash in under an hour running nouveau but is rock stable with the proprietary driver. I would strongly rec...

Re: Systemd free MX19?

The nftables package only supplies a systemd unit file, no init script is included. This means it cannot be autostarted at boot unless a custom script is provided. You mean like the script provided in the nftables package at /usr/share/doc/nftables/examples/sysvinit/nftables.init ? Debian doesn't i...

Re: Zombieload

The problem is that the last character of the link is an underscore ( _ ). Underscores at the end of a link don't show up as part of the link but are shown appended after. You can add it manually in the address bar and hit enter after the link fails.

Re: Zombieload

The new spectre-meltdown-checker 0.41 I just packaged and sent up scans for these and reported my system OK after rebooting with the new microcode. They still need to tweak the spectre-meltdown-checker. It shows my AMD FX6300 system to be vulnerable to Zombieload, Fallout and the two RIDL vulnerabl...

Re: Bbswitch doesn't turn off gpu after optirun

Bbswitch can't disable a video card whose kernel module is still loaded.
Have you tried running

Code: Select all

sudo rmmod nvidia
before the bbswitch command?

Re: The new computer build

Battery Backup for desktop machines is de rigueur here in the lightning capitol of North America. Most of the outages are very short (as in under 10 seconds) but in the summer ones long enough to reboot a computer can happen several times a week. And there are usually a couple longer ones every year...
