Re: Simple A/V editing with VLC

Thanks; I didn't know that, and instead use Openshot for simple editing, but this would be a much quicker way.

Re: Good WiFi dongle

In general, built in network cards work much better than USB one because they have dual antennas going up into the screen area. I have come across laptops with poor wireless performance that has been due to one antenna being disconnected at the network card. If you want to check this first, it's eas...

Re: Auto install updates?

Auto updating is a scary proposition, even for a distro built on Debian Stable. There is always the odd chance an update will remove something important and bork your system. I like to see what is happening during updates. On the other hand, if you are setting up a machine for someone who would nev...

Re: Auto install updates?

Assuming you are running 17.1, right-click the Updater icon, select Preferences, and check Auto Update. The information is in section 3.2.1 of the manual, which is well worth at least having a look through, if you haven't already done so. For security reasons, no new packages are added automatically...

Does the ddm-mx nvidia installer still work correctly after all the nvidia related updates?
Did a fresh install, fully updated it to 9.5, then ran the Nvidia installer.

After necessary reboot, all is well. Quick System Info shows driver changed from nouveau to nvidia 340.106

Re: TRUE session save possible? MX Tools? How?

I think you can use the "Session and Startup" tool to save a session. But if the autosave at logout isn't working, that might not either. I've tested that in the past, and just checked again, but it appears to randomly choose what to restart. I use three virtual desktops, and the things that do get...

Re: How to use nvidia

Laptops with dual video graphics can be problematic. My experience with them is with Dell machines, and I've never found an entirely satisfactory solution. Synaptic has Bumblebee, software and drivers that attempt to make use of the two cards, and the Wiki has some information on this. Another optio...
