Re: MX-17.1 on Dell XPS 13

I won a used XPS 13 on eBay for a good price recently. It's a previous generation 9394 model, with Core i7/8GB RAM/256GB SSD. I don't need Windows on it, so swapped out the SSD to retain the Windows install in case I get rid of the laptop. Unfortunately it has the QHD touchscreen, with a resolution ...

Magazine review feedback

The June edition of the UK's Linux Format magazine gave MX a glowing review, with a 10/10 score. They missed the point about the vertical panel, and the ease of moving it, so I wrote an explanation, which the editor was kind enough to publish in the latest edition:

Re: MX Tools Panel Missing After Update

No problem like that here, and no other forum reports.

What happens when you try to launch MX Tools from the terminal? Any error messages?

Code: Select all

Re: Need Help in Upgrading Processor

It's very unlikely that any other CPU than the one you have will increase performance in a way you would notice. It might benchmark a tiny bit faster, but not enough to make it worth the effort, bearing in mind you would be looking at finding and buying a used CPU, with all the attendant risks. Save...

Re: First time user of SSD. Help!

One tip: when SSDs die, they do it instantly. No warning, just a complete failure.
For that reason it's more important than ever to have a full, up to date backup.

Re: First time user of SSD. Help!

Thanks UM. Let me follow up with: 1) Is once per week enough to trim? 2) Is it better to shut off the system at night or just let it run? 3) Do I need to update the firmware on the SSD? 1) For the vast majority of users, yes. 2) Because you have an SSD, or generally? In either case, shut it down, a...

Re: First time user of SSD. Help!

You don't need to do anything.

Trim is logged here:

Code: Select all

/var/log/trim.log
and takes place weekly. If you are of a cautious nature, you might check that log in a month or so's time.

It was tested during development pretty well, and I'm running an SSD here with no issues.

Re: nl.mxrepo.com

Confirmed as working here in UK; perhaps a temporary glitch?
