Re: Snapshots

I just revisited this thread and realised I'd missed the 3 beeps in your first post. On your laptop, the 3 beeps are typically related to a memory failure, so at the least, you should try removing your RAM modules and re-seating or replacing them, dependent on how many you have installed and while y...

Re: Snapshots

The reason for the failure is simply that it was a consumer level HP. Entry level HP machines (IMNSHO, all consumer models) have a history of dying mid-use due to cost cutting measures during manufacture. The largest consistent string of failures can usually be traced to the power circuit feeding th...

Re: Open letter to the MX developers from an Ubuntu user

The taskbar on the LHS is not a showstopper, it's a feature that's there for a very good reason. We're not aiming to become a fashion model here, we seek to make and provide a better engineered platform for all the right reasons. The greatest percentage of displays available and in use today have a ...

Re: WINE install failure

undo and redo, but first, delete the hidden .wine folder from your profile. Undo - purge wine and all elements installed earlier because the wrong path was chosen during installation. Best practise is, MX Package Installer should be your first choice. Then do the obvious, install wine using MXPI. If...

Re: What advice would you give to new people just starting to use Linux?

Most people don't have a clue what the real definition of an OS is, so I start with questions like what do you use your computer for and let them answer taking note of what they say, then I follow up with what else do you do other than the ones you just told me about. Often, I'll get one or two othe...

Re: Show device names in Thunar? (solved)

Immediately after plugging in your external device, run dmesg |tail Easier way is to watch messages in real time. The following will print all dmesg entries to your display through the Xfce terminal window as they happen, so if you run it before plugging any device in, you'll see the system message...

Re: Port MX to sideload on Win10? Let the debate begin!!!

Using a computer for whatever you want it for, doesn't make a person a "pleg", whatever that is... I'm just assuming it's derogatory. It sounds it... Sorry about that. it might mean different things to different people, countries, languages or other. It was coined to mean an individual wi...
