Should work, but I think the partition needs to be equal in size. I usually use "rsync -a" for this kind of situations (add v for verbose). After you copy, if you want to boot from it, the only things you need to pay attention are /etc/fstab -- should be updated to follow the new partition...

It might depends on systemd too, that's the problem with Ubuntu debs. Debian stuff is supposed to not depends on systemd but people who do stuff for distros like Ubuntu don't care about that.

I think VirtualBox is probably the best choice, also MX has the VirtualBox guest modles pre-installed so it makes everything easier.
