Re: UEFI vs BIOS I give up ( A Rant)

I have wanted to have a fully installed Linus OS on a thumb drive - not a "live-usb" , but a fully installed OS - like on the hard drive. I have a high end Corsair GTX which has an SSD controller - so looks like a hard drive and is blazing fast. My own machines are all on Legacy Bios. And...

Re: UEFI vs BIOS I give up ( A Rant)

I have stockpiles a bunch of thinkpads circa 2011. because I think the PC has gone backwars since then, just look at that ridiculous spectacle clled Windows 10 . just saw an article warning that the latest update makes the file manger fail to ... well... manage files !! Re: Ouch!

Half of the slowness is probably due to all the OEM bloatware if it's the original installation. I used to have an ultrabook, 6th gen (Skylake) Core i7 mobile CPU, 12GB DDR3-1600 RAM, 1TB HDD and Windows 10. Like you, I fired it up to have a look-see prior to installing Linux (Mint.) Like you I was...

Re: Ouch!

But I look at the OS kind of like I look at my home furnace. It just works. Not looking for it to entertain me , or talk to me, or save me from the apocalypse - just burn the oil and make hot water to flow through the pipes. Do it consistently and predictably.

Re: Ouch!

The "help" is equally disastrous. generally will ask a lot of stupid questions - plug your machine into the wall, the prongs on the plug must fit into the the slits in the wall socket etce etc. Treat you like you are really really brain dead. But of course .... no real help of any sort. No...

Re: Ouch!

The messages reflect the bureaucratic arrogance " wait - do not turn off machine" ( sort of like "officer is at lunch sit on bench and wait".) And plenty of threats thrown in " Do this immediately - or terrible things will happen" its all part of a massively tone deaf b...

Re: Ouch!

I have a few laptops - 4 lenovo X230 machines and others. I have been stockpiling those x230 machines - last one I bought for $60. Great shape - hardly used ! Anyway it came with win10 , I installed Debian buster and everything worked great. Then , just out of curiousity I booted into the win 10, Ho...

@rs55: Here is my experiment: Very interesting , @rs55. Thank you for sharing your test results with us. - I uninstalled pulse and pavu and all pulse associated things. I.e. set up the way that @dreamer and I have worked it out so far , with great help from @dolphin_oracle. As to your report, this ...

During startup the lightdm-wallpaper appears for a moment, before bringing up the desktop

In the lightdm settings - if you uncheck the "user wallpaper" box - then it wont do that.
