Re: Question about program upgrades and persistence choices

Yes, naming of the persistence options is confusing, though I think I can finally get my mind around the descriptions at: https://download.tuxfamily.org/antix/docs-antiX-17/FAQ/persistence.html . I think this is most complete description of the persistence options in one place. The built-in boot hel...

Re: Upgrade 144 packages exit status 135

This stick may have fatal problems. Note tail of dmesg below for SQUASHFS errors. I'm remaking it from a known good and up-to-date live usb. [ 55.796092] systemd-logind[7971]: Failed to start user service, ignoring: Unknown unit: user@1000.service [ 55.972151] Bluetooth: Core ver 2.22 [ 55.972176] N...

Re: Upgrade 144 packages exit status 135

Can you post the entire thing between code tags? Always helpful to have the full info :) Thanks for the reply. As requested, this is what it looks like this morning after a reboot: apt dist-upgrade Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Calculating ...

Upgrade 144 packages exit status 135

Doing a routine update on a two-or-three months out-of-date MX-18 64bit live-usb full-persistence with 144 packages pending. I'm stuck. Here are the final errors. ldconfig: /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/ld-2.24.so is the dynamic linker, ignoring ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 -> ld-2.24.so /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu: ...

Remaster Glitch

While remastering my up-to-date 64 bit MX live-usb today, I ran into a glitch on the screen that comes up showing estimated sizes of different compression options. The screen appeared to be fixed size, would not let me resize or maximize it, but also did not show any place to click OK or Continue. I...

Re: Can I use snapshots as a backup? [SOLVED]

Yet dar is seldom offered in manuals, user guides, or on-line conversations as a backup tool. In fact, yesterday's DW weekly https://distrowatch.com/weekly.php?issue=20190422#poll included a poll on preferred backup tools that did not include dar as an option, and few backup programs use it. An Inte...

Any suggestions on a good dock to replace the taskbar? Something that can be translucent at bottom of screen?
Thanks
Are asking about the XFCE panel? It's not called taskbar? The panel can be translucent at the bottom.

Re: Can I use snapshots as a backup?

You can use tar to make a tarball of all or the parts of your system that you want to backup. In the simplest form would be: [...] The dar program is vastly superior to tar for this sort of thing. It does just about everything you would want from a real backup program. The tar program is great for ...

Re: Distrowatch Ranking

It's very nice to see that my choice of distribution has been ratified by so many others. The downside is the big target on the back of MX-Linux for wannabe Linux critics and trolls.

Re: Can I use snapshots as a backup?

I would add that snapshot/live-usb also completely removes any anxiety about getting a virus , ransomware or some such. No need to slow down the system with virus-checkers etc - to protect against the remote probability of these things. This thread is lapsing into imaginary problems and imaginary s...
