Well, dolphin_oracle, interesting. Still not working, but there are interesting things about it not working. After booting into sysVinit, it ends up - same as usual - at black/blank screen. CTRL-ALT-F1 to get to a text console. Login as usual. 1st command: sudo service lightdm start Says starting.....

ran

sudo service lightdm start

There is a slight pause, then back to prompt. That's all.

(Edit: but remember, I'm now in systemd, not sysVinit. OK?)
