Experienced exact same problem trying to install MX18.3 on Acer ES1-533. On other versions of Linux, same thing happens. The key to it all is the --no-nvram switch to stop the computer crashing during grub install due to an intentionally dodgy UEFI implementation. This is not unique to Acer laptops ...
