thank-you dolphin_oracle. xorg=nvidia did the trick. i did check it on both uefi and legacy bios. it worked on both. you have saved the day once again

thanks for the suggestion. i did forget to mention that the snapshot boots into gui on my laptop which is mx18.3(no nvidia drivers). i will report back
