Peppermint was controlling the boot sequence but I changed it to MX a few days back to see if that changed anything

Not had any suggestions so tried what I can think of...

I've deleted the apps recently installed and also freed up a fair bit of hard drive space, as was 95% full when I posted originally.

Thought it might be a gnome thing, but issue the same if log into different DE

It's not a fresh install. The only recent change I've made is to install Steam, which I doubt would interfere with shutdown. Seems to take about a minute for Shut Down to actually shut down...

No idea how to troubleshoot this - any ideas?

Thanks mate, that's good to know. When you use an ancient laptop, you can't expect everything to run! I just wanted to double check it wasn't anything I could fix
