Re: Linux Security in question.

rkhunter is probably more useful to servers than desktops, but either way, installing it and just running it isn't really much use - but, use it as intended after editing the .conf file, and it can indeed be useful. A couple of years ago, a user on another forum I'm a member of posted a short .pdf ...

Re: Color Log Files

Yes... I tested it: What you put in your file test are, I suppose, ANSI escape sequences. The log files with embedded color, (/var/log/boot) appear to have control codes. echo -e $(cat /var/log/boot) doesn't work any better than cat, more, or less. Scratch that - I just noticed you've been given th...

Re: Remove Errant Launcher from Menu

There's a a number of Menu Editors that can do what you want, and more - I use alacarte.

Type the following in the Terminal:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install alacarte
Or use Synaptic if you prefer.

What about

Code: Select all

echo -e $(cat yourfilename)
No sir, that does not work. Did you try that?
Yes... I tested it:

Re: Reliability tool for Linux?

As has been said, most of the logs are meaningless to most users - the main use is for troubleshooting problems... no problems, no need to troubleshoot ;) You could just type: dmesg -T | grep -i --colour "error\|warn\|fail" into a terminal if you're curious, or if you have a problem. Running this s...

Re: Unable to execute bash script from thunar

It's was a change made by Thunar devs...

You need to revert the change using XFCE Settings editor:

Have a look here. You'll need to add the /misc-exec-shell-scripts-by-default (don't miss out the leading forward slash at the start) by selecting New - Type as Boolean Value as True.

Re: MX Linux gains distrowatch "Major" Linux distribution status

I'm pleased to see Mepis and Antix getting a mention too.

(I wasn't sure about the "Major" tag, but considering Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu which is based on Debian.. I see no reason for MX not to be in the same group/category)
