So it seems that the window default problem is due to XFCE changes and the FDD problem is probably due to changes to the new kernel no longer recognising legacy FDDs?

My FDD was automatically recognised in Mx18-3 and ran fine.

Yes thank you guys. The panel was unlocked. I have now locked it and the rectangles have disappeared. I don't recall that issue with Mx18-3.
