Re: Adventures With Windows 10

Why do I want a dual-boot if I can do everything with MX? I will use VirtualBox to run Windows programs that have no substitute in GNU / Linux and thus have everything available.. I only need Win 10 for tax software. In the past, I've used Virtualbox, QEMU, Parallels, VMWare, and WINE (as another a...

Re: VLC High CPU Usage

Go into the vlc settings and try different acceleration options. I believe the default is auto. you can try the others and see if anything helps. I removed my Synaptic lock and did "apt-mark unhold vlc" to get the latest version and your tip worked. Movies! I had to change the setting fro...

Re: Dedoimedo back to MX Tools

I'm just glad the nvidia install worked. He's running the 340 legacy driver that we had a little trouble with earlier in the year. The default proprietary nvidia driver install even worked on my wife's Macbook! Like Steve Jobs used to say, "it just works!" I just have to find time to backup her hom...

Re: VLC High CPU Usage

3.X tries to use the openGL video output by default. You can tell it to use the XVideo or X11 outputs instead in the Video settings. You have to restart VLC for the change to take effect. If that doesn't help, please provide the output of "inxi -G" "xvinfo" and "vlc <filename>" in the terminal. Edi...

Re: VLC High CPU Usage

Hi calinb, I moved your posts to their own thread - "MX 17 Repository: The VLC Thread" is for package versions produced by the MX packagers, while you (and probably anyone running an up to date MX 17) are now using the Debian package version. I didn't realize the support shift to Debian packages an...

Re: MX 17 Repository: The VLC Thread

To make sure everything's been refreshed, if you haven't already, I would try sudo apt update && sudo apt dist-upgrade && sudo apt purge vlc && sudo apt autoremove --purge && sudo apt install vlc && vlc --reset-config Just watch the output to make sure nothing unintended is being removed I tried th...

VLC High CPU Usage

I just ran an update on my 64-bit MX-17 and 32-bit MX-16 computers and MX-17 VLC is completely unusable (top utility shows CPU usage through the roof on videos that played just fine previously). I'll work my way though the above hints but for now I have: $ apt show -a vlc Package: vlc Version: 3.0.2...

Re: MX 16 on a Chromebook

Well. That was a washout. Write protect is still enabled. If I can ever get it disabled. I will never unjumper that POS again. I don't want protection. I think you might have the situation KBD suspected (or maybe it was someone else). The board might have an open trace or pin or pull-up resistor so...

Re: MX 16 on a Chromebook

Well. Being patient has paid off so far. My syringe from hong kong of liquid solder finally, just came in the mail. I am gonna take my time on this one as I go about this. In other words. A day or more away on this project. I will take pictures for you guys to see what is what. But no hurrying on m...
