Re: [SOLVED] Multi-line replacing in large text files.

I know where you're at - learning vi is some rite of passage. I still remember my 1st day at that new job, I was super eager to learn about Unix which i had not used previously. They put me in front of a serial terminal and told me to get acquainted with the environment. When they came back to take...

Re: [SOLVED] Multi-line replacing in large text files.

Multiple text files all have the single line MyOziMap in them, starting at the beginning of the line with nothing else on the line. Multi-file processing I'd rather do with sed on the commandline instead with vim, like this example ( with echo to show ) i=1; for f in $( ls MyMapFile*.map) ; do I=$(...

Re: [SOLVED] Multi-line replacing in large text files.

Please do not add to threads marked as "solved" but open a new one. Ok no probs, was just trying to keep it all together as I've found it very very frustrating over the last few weeks trying to learn this stuff having to search hundreds of threads for each tiny little snippet of info. I was thinkin...

Re: [SOLVED] Multi-line replacing in large text files.

Something else I can't figure out with Vim & would be grateful for any assistance with. Multiple text files all have the single line MyOziMap in them, starting at the beginning of the line with nothing else on the line. I planned to change this when originally editing them but forgot, now I have sev...

I use FSlint for comparing files/folders etc., installed via Synaptic, works ok.

Re: [SOLVED] Multi-line replacing in large text files.

your %s line is simply missing a backslash in front of the opening square bracket for [END]; the following works for me: :%s/^\[POI\]\nType=0x2800\nLabel=MAPCENTRE\nData0=(-\d\d.\d\d\d\d\d,\d\d\d.\d\d\d\d\d)\n\[END\]// and to remove surrounding newlines include them as optional elements of your pat...

Re: [SOLVED] Multi-line replacing in large text files.

Still working on the same large text file, I'm trying to remove all instances of [POI] Type=0x2800 Label=MAPCENTRE Data0=(-18.00003,124.50003) [END] Could you re-phrase your condition for deleting this line-block, to make it clearer. When it's deleted from between the previous line-block and the fo...

Re: [SOLVED] Multi-line replacing in large text files.

Hit a minor stumbling block with Vim that I can't seem to get around as yet. Just wondering if anyone knows what I'm doing wrong here, or if what I'm trying to do is not possible? Still working on the same large text file, I'm trying to remove all instances of [POI] Type=0x2800 Label=MAPCENTRE Data0...
