Re: What have been your best/worst computer deals?

Two best deals come to mind: eMachines EM250 netbook (rebranded Acer) purchased from Walmart in Feb 2010 for $200 to replace a homebuilt circa 2001 desktop that went bellyup, at a time when I could afford little else; still works, swapped in a 32GB Dogfish SSD last year; Lenovo i3-3227 based X131e f...

Re: "Lite Linux" or "MXLinux" ?

From my informal comparison some time ago (the MX used was 17.1 I think), Lite typically used considerably more RAM than MX.

Re: Why is MX-Linux more popular than LinuxMint

And then there's the MX Manual. It has no rivals in the Linux world IMHO. And the left side panel just works on the ultra-wide laptop screens that have been almost exclusively used since ~2010. The MX Package Installer is second to none, except perhaps Deepin, which I will never use because of its o...

Re: Move taskbar to bottom?

Auto-hide the taskbar can also be activated by right-clicking with the pointer in the unused portion of the taskbar, and looking for the option.

Re: Best Distro for an Old Laptop

With 2GB RAM, 64bit version is a waste of resources--32bit version typically uses about 100MB less RAM at idle. MX runs fine on a 2GB circa 2011 netbook, with a much more obsolescent cpu than yours.

Re: What was your first Linux distro?

Debian Potato back in 2001 when I went back to college after a 21 year hiatus. After I graduated, technically in 2005, I didn't use Linux again until 2012, when I dabbled fairly unsuccessfully (largely because I made the Linux partition too small) with Easy Peasy 1.6 on a n270 based Acer built eMach...

Re: Are you a cook?

Mmmm, Yes, to answer the OP's 1st Q. Not in the mood to wax verbose atmo though. Seeing as how my earthlink personal webpage that I had favorite recipes on "is currently being migrated".

Re: Who is using SSD's?

I have replaced all of my mechanical HDDs with SSDs of various sizes and brands over the past 2 years or so. Kingston, Samsung, OCZ, Crucial, Intel, and Dogfish. All are still going strong--I wouldn't hesitate to recommend any of them, though, none of my laptops and netbooks are made by Dell. Even a...

Re: Why XFCE?

I've used a few DEs in my time. I like some of them. But I always prefer Xfce if the distribution supports it. Some users have to have bells and whistles, and more bells and newer whistles. I don't need wobbly things and spinning things. My goal is not to play with the DE. I just want my DE to work...

Re: intel/lenovo Drivers

What you have is a problem, if you're not running 32bit Windows 7. Because the Atom n2600/n2800 cpu's used a proprietary gpu designed by PowerVR, under contract to Intel, and wrote only one video driver for it, that works ONLY with 32bit Windows 7. Apparently, either Intel or Microsoft belatedly ada...
