Do you have any or do they provide .ovpn files? If so simply import them into networkmanager and insert you username and password. Easiest away around using their third party apps which are likely to break since all distro's are not the same.

PIA's app is developed to work on Ubuntu. Although Ubuntu is based on Debian they do differ in many areas. I just import an ovpn in NetworkManager and haven't had any issues going that route.
