Re: Can anyone recommend to me a cheapish, current model notebook that loves Linux?

While I have faster, more powerful laptops, I use my Lenovo X230 (Core I5) more than any other. You can find them cheap and they are good machines...

Re: What advice would you give to new people just starting to use Linux?

My advice is use the programs you need just as you do under Windows. Many of them are the same or nearly so and let's be honest, most folks turn on their computer to do something other than play with the OS. Surf the web, listen to music, watch videos, read a book, build a spreadsheet, create a writ...

It's probably time to retire that hardware. You can find used laptops very reasonably priced...

Re: what was the first linux distro you used

Started with Ubuntu in the mid-2000s and looked at just about everything. I've spent a lot of time with Buntu 16.04 (a heavily modified Lubuntu with XFCE), PCLinuxOS, Manjaro, and of course MX. Linux was just a hobby and a toy until Win 10 - then it became a necessity to find a distro that meets my ...

I prefer Leafpad to both and it's the first thing I installed in MX-17 (mainly because I'm used to it)...

Re: Word processor and screen question.

I always disable the touchpad on my laptops as I find it can mess up typing if you brush it. I always use a USB mouse in lieu of the touchpad. I think there is an app or setting that can disable the touchpad while typing but for me I just disable it...

Made the cut!

After many years of searching, I've found that MX-17 can be the sole OS on my wife's computer - she is now Windows free. She basically does not like technology and hates change but I was able to tweak an MX-17 install to fit her needs and installed it. I can't overstate the value of MX-Snapshot - it...

Re: MX-17 Live USB unable to create persistence files during boot

Yes, it's with a snapshot ISO as I make a lot of changes after installation as I use different software from what's included on the default ISO (as I assume many folks do). I'm running the 4.14 debian kernel... System: Host: tpd Kernel: 4.14.0-3-amd64 x86_64 bits: 64 Desktop: Xfce 4.12.3 Distro: MX-...
