You can tailor sudo to allow just a few commands to be run, by only some people, or a certain group, also it can 'time out'.
Whereas, if you su, you are now able to do anything system wide, including deleting it.

I got that Sourceforge message yesterday (or the day before?), when I was trying to help someone on one of the forums I participate in.

Edit: Just tried it, it's up again.
Edit2: Correction, I got the home page just now, but it's still "temporarily in static offline mode."

I sometimes get a similar error when I hurriedly click on something, the mouse pointer must move a fraction, & I think it gives a 'click & drag' situation. Remedy - click on items more slowly, works for me.
