problem with the video when I lift the laptop lid
With my old, old Thinkpad T420 approaching an unacceptable state of disrepair--two keys broken, a large dead spot on the screen, and now one USB port probably going bad--I dug out another old laptop, because I don't want to buy another laptop at this time. I don't even know yet what the common name ...

"additional customization options" in MX Snapshot [Solved]
I only just paid attention to those for the first time ever, and they piqued my curiosity. Apparently one can change the project name, release version, or release codename on the snapshot, and a few other things. It's just that I'm not sure why I would want to do that. Why, for instance, might I wan...

Re: MX has the easiest installer in the Debian family
I installed Mint, in order to familiarize myself with its installer to better help a family member who wants to install it. Anyway, I was again reminded of what I said in this thread title. Even Mint's installer is a pain compared to MX's. (And why didn't I try to convince him to try MX? Because he'...

how would I edit my menus to remove a duplicate subgroup? [Solved]
At some point, my menus became distorted so that I have two identical, duplicate MX Tools subgroups. I'm pretty sure it happened because I shared the same home folder with another distro in the Debian family. It (Devuan, if you want to know) occasionally changes some minor detail that I didn't tell ...

how did MX avoid this problem with xfce4-notes?
I have been trying the distro Devuan, but I found out that unlike MX, Devuan currently can't use xfce4-notes. When I inquired on the Devuan forum, the developers gave this explanation: The buster version needs libunique, which is abandoned upstream and unmaintained. Having it on your system might ex...

Re: is make-fstab unique to MX? [Solved]
Follow-up: Based on learning here that make-fstab is just a shell script located in /usr/sbin, I copied it to another Debian-baased distro (Devuan, to be specific) to see if it I could indeed use make-fstab there. It works fine. Wish the script were in wider use in the Debian family. It's a good tool.

MX boot repair-->reinstall bootloader (option 1) wrote the wrong entry for my other distro
After the latest distro I am exploring rewrote the bootloader as expected, I immediately went back to MX to re-write the bootloader again , because I was happy enough with MX's bootloader menu and didn't want its appearance tampered with. It's just that I figured out something I didn't know. I picke...

Re: MX has the easiest installer in the Debian family
I don't see what's difficult about Debian installer either. It's not really rocket science. Our has nice features like being able to install preserving content in /home (even if it's on the same partition as root) and it's faster but it's also not like you install the OS every other day... Our inst...

MX has the easiest installer in the Debian family
I have been exploring some other Debian-based distros, and I found that their installers are a pain in the you-know-what compared to the MEPIS-type installer. Especially pure Debian's, which--if I recall--is shared by Devuan (similar if not identical) and possibly others. Much easier to make a catas...
