any character map applications in MX?

I wanted to type a certain French word with an accent, but as far as I know, I don't have a character map application. Does MX include one, and I've just never noticed it? If not, that's okay: I looked up what's available, and am going to try gucharmap (Gnome).

is Unetbootin still broken? [solved]

I just noticed I apparently still have UNetbootin installed--I didn't remember. I think I'll uninstall it anyway, because who needs it now that our native liveUSB maker works. But out of curiosity, does Unetbootin even work now? Back when I first tried MX liveUSB (a few years ago), I gave up after b...

a slight improvement you could make in the liveUSB's installer

I have noticed that if you install MX to hard drive from a liveUSB, in the box (near the end of the installer) asking which partition (on which device) you will want to boot your new installation from, the choices default to the liveUSB;s partition. In other words, the installer assumes you want to ...

Re: persistence menu keeps saying I don't have dynamic root persistence enabled

Some questions: Is it in BIOS or UEFI mode booting? How was the LiveUSB stick created? What MX version was used to create the LiveUSB? It was created using most likely MX-16. I hadn't been using any other version for a while. I created it using that native liveUSB maker of ours. (Not unetbootin; I ...

persistence menu keeps saying I don't have dynamic root persistence enabled

I keep trying to effect root persistence but the persistence menu keeps saying dynamic root persistence is not enabled. Okay, how do I enable it? I haven't seen such an option. I guess this would explain why my root doesn't save even though I set it to automatic saving. Any time I reboot, I have to ...

Re: can I use a newer MX's sources list for older MX? bad idea?

Yes, we had both MX-15/16 & antiX key expiration events. To update the MX-15 key look here: https://forum.mxlinux.org/viewtopic.php?p=480507#p480507 Once you have that key updated, run sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install antix-archive-keyring to fix the antiX key expiration. I'm still running ...

Re: I've created persistence, now what?

Never mind, I answered my own question--I mean I now see there is a config menu with auto-save options. No, wait, that specifies root persistence. What about /home persistence auto-save?

I've created persistence, now what? [solved]

Running the liveUSB system, I have for the first time created /home persistence so I can save the changes. Now that I've created it, do I have to do anything in particular to save before shutting down, or will it save automatically? Now that I think of it, I changed the fstab and added folders in /m...

can I use a newer MX's sources list for older MX? bad idea?

I just went to the MX repo page to see if my sources list needs updating, since my last apt-get update produced some expiration-related error messages. I'm still using MX 16, so do I need to stick with the MX-16 sources list, or should I update to MX-18's?

Re: could I put a livesystem on an SD card?:

Hmm, I see from the responses that although possible, this would be an absolute last resort. Considering that some claim it would be slow, I suppose I would want the system to be antiX.
